On a Personal Note...Women, Make Sure You Are Getting Regular Exams and Checkups to Detect Breast Cancer.

Nina and Kevin recently lost a relative to breast cancer, so we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about some important information regarding breast cancer.

  • 1 in 8 Women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • For women in the U.S., breast cancer kills more women than any other form of cancer, except lung cancer.
  • Breast cancer is the 2nd most common type of cancer among women.

The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the odds of beating it are.

  • Starting around age 20, women should begin performing self exams every month. If you find anything out of the ordinary, check with your doctor.
  • You should have your doctor examine your breasts once every three years starting at the age of twenty, and once a year at the age of 40. If you have a history of cancer in your family, you may want to have an exam more frequently.
  • Beginning at age 40, it is recommended that women begin to have annual mammograms (an x-ray of the breast). If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, you may want to begin at an earlier age.

Many women schedule their annual exams around their birthdays. Its an easy day to remember.
